Ron, our condolences for yor loss and Chuck's passing. I always enjoyed Chuck when in his company, he always had a big smile and strong handshake when meeting. He was a selfless man that always wanted to make the conversation about who he was visiting with and not himself. Both of your parents were very giving. Knowing Chuck was a student and teacher of history, I once asked him a few years back if he could remember when he first heard about Pearl Harbor, and to no surprise he had a vivid recollection of the day, where he was and what he was doing. As you know, we have the family piano that your dad gave us sitting in our living room, it will always be taken care and handed down. All the best to the family, we will always have great memories of Chuck.

What a wonderful man and teacher! I was fortunate enough to graduate from Arvada High School in 1984 and took every course I could from Mr. Patera. I learned so much about our world from this outstanding teacher.
Later on in life, I was lucky to get to know his son, Ron. Ron not only has his looks, but his sense of humor, as well. Clearly, not only was he a great educator, he was an outstanding father and mentor. My deepest sympathies to the Patera family. He will be missed.

Sad to hear that Mr. Patera has passed.
A couple of distinct memories of him were telling us he wanted to walk up to us years later, and say to us (and here he'd stomp his foot and point) "Alexander the Second!" and we were to respond "Freed the serfs!". He was determined that if we remembered nothing else from Russian History, we were to remember that. I got so much out of that class and it helps understand current events.
Another memory is seeing the movie Fast Times At Ridgemont High in an actual theater, at Westminster Mall, and the first time Mr. Hand had a scene, hearing in the audience all around me "Mr. Patera!", even as my sister and I turned to each other and said the same thing. Now when I see it, I will sure be a bit sad knowing that this good one is gone.
He did a lot of good in this world, and helped shape the lives and world view of hundreds of students.
I wish we had a million more like him in our school systems, even as I know there will never be another one like him.
Semper Fi, Mr. Patera, from a former student and fellow vet (US Army). God Bless you.

I was an Arvada High student of Mr. Patera’s in ‘81. I remember him very fondly & had just been talking about him a week or 2 ago. I had him for Russian History. He was a favorite teacher of mine. I understood his sense of humor and many of his obscure references (that many students didn’t get). Maybe it’s because my siblings were all older, maybe it’s because my father was also a teacher, but I was often laughing when others were silent — he knew then that he had a student who would appreciate many of his jokes and asides. I really liked him and enjoyed his class. He was a good teacher. I am sorry to hear of his passing. I hope that his family will find comfort in their memories and know that he positively affected many lives as a teacher. May he rest in peace.
