Obituary of Sterling M. Wetzsteon

Sterling Wetzsteon, 72, of Sula, Montana, passed away on April 9, 2013. He was born on January 18, 1941. He attended Darby schools until his graduation in 1959. He was an outstanding student and athlete, in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He attended the University of Montana from 1959-1963. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and the Men's Track Team. He graduated in 1963 with a degree in Business Administration, and after 4 years in ROTC, was commissioned a 2nd LT in the USAF. After graduating from pilot training in Selma, Alabama, he was stationed at Travis AFB, near Fairfield, CA. He flew the C-130, and the C-141, flying over 200 missions to Vietnam and other areas of Southeast Asia. In 1969, he was hired as a pilot for Western Air Lines. In 1987, he began flying for Delta Airlines. He retired from Delta Airlines just before his 60th birthday in January, 2001. After retiring, he loved spending time in the Bitterroot Valley, hunting, fishing, being with family and friends. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge in Hamilton, and received his 50 year pin in 2012. He was a member of Bagdad Shriners International. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Thousand Oaks, CA. He was a member of the House of Delegates at the University of Montana, the "M" club, a Life Member of the Alumni Association, and an alumni of Phi Delta Theta. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Paula, his daughters, Jill Applebury (Darin) of Anchorage, AK, Julie George of Parker, CO, Keri Churchich (Chris) of Longmont, CO, 8 grandchildren, and many, many friends. He is also survived by a brother, Gary. Sterling was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Edgar, brothers, Gordon, Herald, and sister, Margaret (Peg). The Bitter Root Land Trust will be accepting donations in memory of Sterling Wetzsteon, PO Box 1806, Hamilton, MT, 59840. It was his dream to see the land conserved. Other organizations that were important to Sterling include The University of Montana Foundation, and the Sula Volunteer Fire Department. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Sula Club House on Sunday, May 26 at 2:00 pm. Service Information
