Obituary of Mary M. McGuire
Mary Ruth (McQueen) McGuire, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Friday, May 15, 2015, in Aurora, Colorado. She was 87.
She was born April 15, 1928 in Bronte, Texas to Omah Roy (O.R.) McQueen and Mattie Lola Rawlings McQueen. She spent most of her adult years in the Bronte and Ballinger area. Mary attended Bronte High School where she hand-printed the school yearbook and graduated in 1945 as Valedictorian of her class. She attended San Angelo State College in Abilene, Texas on June 20, 1957. Mary will be best remembered for her devotion to her family, strong sense of faith, active volunteerism, work ethic and passion for learning new things. She supported her children and grandchildren by making countless cookies, driving miles for band events and attending every school event. Her cooking skills were widely known and attendees at church potlucks emptied her dishes first and begged for recipes.
Mary was an active volunteer in many areas. She was a Sunday school teacher, worked with the handicapped, taught in the Mothers Day Out program and assisted anywhere that she could use her many talents. In Parker, she volunteered at the Parker Senior Center. She was also active in social services at the women’s Hilltop Club. She was a life-long member of the Order of Eastern Star.
In addition to her time as a full-time homemaker, Mary worked for the Texas Highway Department and at the Ballinger Ledger. At the age of seventy she mastered using a personal computer and enjoyed writing letters, finding coupons and emailing friends. She loved the beach and enjoyed spending time with friends on the Washington coast, learning names of all the seabirds she watched. Mary was a skilled gardener and her beautiful flowers were the envy of her beach neighborhood.
She is survived by children Barbara Good (Jim) of Vancouver, Washington, Paula Roger (Hugh) of Parker, Colorado, John Paul McGuire (Kathy) of San Angelo; grandchildren, Jason Barnett, Mackenzie Roger and Jennifer Roger Shaffer(Keith) of Parker, Colorado, and Ryan McGuire (Erin) of Ft. Worth, Texas; great-grandchild, Henry Shaffer. Mary, an only child, was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Paul in 2003.
A Graveside Service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015, at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area "B". A celebration of Mary’s life will follow at the Roger residence in Parker.
