Gerhard (Gary) Walter Redecker was the son of Gerhard and Eva (Roth) Redecker. Born in Mannheim, Germany in 1940, Gary was the oldest of two children. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1950 and moved to Tacoma, Washington. After graduation from Stadium High School, Gary attended the University of Washington, earning a degree in history.
In 1963, he married Donna Jean Yowell at Mather AFB, CA. Gary was commissioned into the Air Force as an officer and worked in security/military police, serving in Vietnam. He trained as an Army Special Forces Green Beret and he graduated from the distinguished Army Ranger School. Gary retired in 1983 as a major after 20 years of military service.
He then moved his family to Elk Grove, CA where he worked for Pan Am World Services until 1989 when he took a position as chief of security at Onizuka Air Force Station in Sunnyvale. Gary then moved to Florida to live the “retired life” on a golf course in Cocoa Beach, FL (although he didn’t even golf).
In 1995, he packed up his belongings and moved to Rincon de Guyabitos, Mexico and basked on the beach for more than a decade, splitting his time between Mexico and Canada before moving to Aurora, CO in 2007 to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren. Gary’s estranged wife Donna passed away in October, 2010.
Gary enjoyed cooking, stamp collecting, playing chess, gardening and long walks on the beach. He is survived by his younger brother Heinz, his children Gary and Terri, and his grandchildren Brett, Shelby and Taylor.
Gary’s life was celebrated with interment and full military honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery on Thursday, August 1 at 9:15 a.m.
